The General Story of William Marshal
William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, also called William the Marshal, was eulogized as “the best knight that ever lived”.
He served five English kings – Henry II, the “Young King” Henry, Richard I, John, and Henry III. In 1216, he was appointed regent of the kingdom. During the trip to Europe, Marshal participated in knightly tournaments and recalled besting 500 knights during his tournament career.
He maintained his loyalty to the King in the First Barons' War and led the young King's army in the battle of Lincoln. William Marshal was a real knight. He changed the knight from a simple career to supreme glory.
